Ilocos Norte Students Benefit from CHED’s Tulong Dunong Financial Aid Program

In a significant boost to their educational journey, 132 students at Mariano Marcos State University in Batac, Ilocos Norte, were each awarded a PHP7,500 grant through the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) Tulong Dunong Program. The distribution took place during a ceremony at the university’s Student Center Building on Thursday, November 28, 2024.

The Tulong Dunong Program offers a one-time financial grant aimed at supporting qualified and deserving students enrolled in undergraduate programs at state universities, CHED-recognized local universities, and private higher education institutions.

Monica Asis, a 22-year-old agriculture student who lost her parents at a young age, expressed her gratitude for the aid. ‘This financial support is crucial for me as I no longer have parents to help me. It will cover my miscellaneous school expenses and daily allowance,’ she explained.

Nelie Eder, a parent from Barangay 10 Cabagan in Paoay town, shared how the grant significantly aids her daughter Niña, a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. ‘The rising cost of transportation from Paoay to Laoag City has been a challenge. This program is a godsend for families like ours,’ Eder remarked.

To ensure the distribution process did not interfere with academic schedules, students unable to attend in person were allowed to send authorized representatives. Lyra Mae Longgat, a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy student, shared her experience with the program. ‘I applied after seeing an announcement on social media. Thankfully, I was approved, and this money will help with my daily school expenses, even though my tuition is covered,’ she said, highlighting the importance of the grant for her daily needs like food and transportation.
