Historic Quezon Hall at West Visayas State University Reopens After Extensive Renovation

·

ILOILO CITY – The iconic Quezon Hall at West Visayas State University (WVSU) in the La Paz district of Iloilo City has been revitalized and reopened to the public. The historic building, originally constructed in 1926, underwent a comprehensive restoration project spearheaded by the Henry Sy Foundation in partnership with the SM Foundation, following an agreement signed earlier this year with WVSU.

The restoration addressed significant deterioration that had affected the hall over the years, including issues with the ceiling, flooring, and windows. The project meticulously preserved the building’s original wooden moldings while repairing concrete and steel components, restoring stairs, balusters, arches, and columns, and repainting architectural features. Additionally, the roof was restored to maintain the hall’s historical essence while ensuring its structural integrity.

WVSU President Dr. Joselito Villaruz praised the Henry Sy Foundation and SM Foundation for their commitment to educational and heritage preservation projects. He emphasized the importance of the project in enhancing the learning and working environment, which is crucial for long-term educational investments.

Dr. Lydia Echauz, executive director of the Henry Sy Sr. Foundation, highlighted the broader impact of the initiative, stating that it not only restores a building but also invests in the future of students who will use the facility. She believes the restored hall will inspire academic excellence and foster community development.

Gerard Ibañez, head of the WVSU Campus Physical Planning Office, noted that the renovation included improvements in lighting with strategically repositioned fixtures. The project also enhanced comfort and functionality by adding ceiling fans and new restroom facilities.

The revamped Quezon Hall now features 24 new classrooms equipped with chairs and tables, along with faculty rooms and administrative offices. The College of Arts and Sciences will oversee the facility, which will serve students from all WVSU colleges.
