Injured NPA Fighter Moved to Naga City for Advanced Medical Treatment

In a compassionate move, the Philippine Army’s 9th Infantry Division facilitated the transfer of an injured New People’s Army (NPA) member, known as alias Leon, from Masbate Provincial Hospital to the Bicol Medical Center in Naga City. The transfer, which took place on November 27, 2024, was necessitated by Leon’s need for more advanced medical care following a skirmish with government forces.

Leon, who was left behind by his fellow rebels in Barangay Cancaharo, Baleno, Masbate, was rescued by soldiers from the 96th Infantry Battalion. The clash also led to the seizure of various weapons and insurgent materials, including M16 rifles, pistols, revolvers, explosives, and documents.

Transported via a government Sokol helicopter, Leon, accompanied by his father, was moved to ensure he received the necessary medical attention. Major Frank Roldan of the 9ID noted that Leon, who had just turned 27, was in stable condition despite leg injuries. His father expressed gratitude towards the soldiers for their life-saving intervention and advised others against joining the NPA, highlighting the hardships it brings to families.

Lieutenant Colonel Francis Espiritu, commander of the 96th Infantry Battalion, emphasized the importance of saving lives, even those of former combatants unable to continue fighting. He also acknowledged the support from local government and community leaders in Baleno for their assistance in the treatment process.
