DOST Promotes Sustainable Practices at National Science and Technology Week in Mindanao

·

During the launch of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) in Cagayan de Oro City, Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. stressed the need for responsible resource use to combat climate change. The event, which kicked off on November 27, 2024, and will continue until December 2, features a wide array of green technology exhibits from across the Philippines.

Solidum, speaking at the opening, underscored the necessity of sustainable practices to lessen the impact of climate change and reduce natural disasters. He pointed out that a major challenge is the lack of long-term thinking, which often leads to the exploitation of natural resources without considering future generations.

The NSTW, hosted in Mindanao, showcases innovations from about 150 exhibitors. These innovations are intended to boost local economies by enhancing value chains at the community level. A highlight of the event is the Innovation Theater, introduced by DOST-Northern Mindanao Director Romela Ratilla. This feature presents ‘ready-to-adopt’ green technologies that aim to support businesses, local governments, and researchers in promoting sustainable development.

Ratilla emphasized that hosting the NSTW in Mindanao reflects the region’s dedication to advancing science and technology for a sustainable future.
