In a recent confrontation in the mountainous region of Catubig town, Northern Samar, the Philippine Army’s 20th Infantry Battalion clashed with remnants of the New People’s Army (NPA). The encounter, which took place on November 25, 2024, in Sulitan village, resulted in the recovery of an M14 rifle, various war materials, subversive documents, and personal items left behind by the rebels.
The skirmish erupted as soldiers were on their way to assist reported wounded NPA members, following tips about armed men seeking medical aid. However, the troops were ambushed by two rebels, sparking a brief exchange of gunfire. Lt. Col. Richard Villaflor, the battalion’s commander, emphasized the army’s readiness to help rebels surrender and reintegrate into society, especially with the holiday season approaching.
This incident is part of an ongoing series of confrontations in the area, which began on November 5 after reports surfaced of NPA members intimidating and extorting local farmers. A significant clash on November 11 led to the deaths of two rebels, including a high-ranking NPA leader, and the discovery of an infant’s remains in an abandoned rebel hideout.
The Philippine Army continues its operations in the region, urging remaining NPA members to lay down their arms and embrace peace, as they work alongside local government to facilitate the rebels’ return to civilian life.
