Cebu City is set to construct a water retention pond in the upland area of Nasipit, Barangay Talamban, as part of its strategy to mitigate flooding in the city’s low-lying areas. Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia announced this initiative on Tuesday, highlighting the city’s proactive approach to managing water flow during heavy rains. The mayor has appointed Danilo Jaque as a technical consultant to oversee the city’s flood control efforts, focusing on drainage and stormwater management. Jaque’s primary task is to conduct a feasibility study for the proposed water retention pond, which aims to protect the neighboring villages of Banilad and Talamban from severe flooding. Mayor Garcia has also sought assistance from the national government via the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to support the project. Jaque, who brings extensive experience from his previous role in the Technical Working Group of the Metro Cebu Integrated Flood Control and Drainage System Master Plan, is expected to provide valuable insights into effective flood management. The cost of the water retention pond is still under evaluation by the city’s new consultant.
