In a move to enhance safety and appeal, the Police Regional Office 6 in Western Visayas is setting its sights on transforming Boracay Island into a pilot area for gun-free zones. This initiative was announced by the regional director, Brig. Gen. Jack Wanky, during a recent media conference. The decision follows a resolution passed by the Regional Peace and Order Council on November 22, urging local government units across Western Visayas to implement similar zones in their tourist destinations, in compliance with Republic Act 10591, the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
Wanky emphasized that the goal is for local governments to designate specific areas as gun-free zones, based on recommendations from local law enforcement. He believes this will not only improve the image of these areas but also attract more tourists to Western Visayas, known for its numerous tourist attractions. Under this policy, even individuals with permits to carry firearms will be prohibited from bringing guns into these zones. Additionally, patrolling police officers will also be unarmed, though Special Weapons and Tactics teams will be strategically positioned to handle any emergencies.
The initiative also aims to shift public perception about the necessity of firearms among police officers, promoting the idea that the use of guns should be a last resort. Wanky hopes this will contribute to a reduction in firearm-related crimes. A dedicated team will work with officials in Malay, Aklan, to establish the gun-free zone in Boracay.
On the same day, Wanky oversaw a change of command ceremony at the regional headquarters in Iloilo, where Col. Victorino Romanillos Jr. of the Aklan Police Provincial Office and Col. Arnel Ramos of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion exchanged positions. This move is part of routine personnel rotations, as Romanillos approaches the end of his two-year tenure.
