Bacolod City is taking significant steps towards sustainability by installing solar power systems across its government center and various public buildings in 15 villages. The initiative, which began with the activation of a 400-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system at the Bacolod City Government Center, aims to drastically cut electricity expenses. Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez expressed optimism about the project, noting that it not only promises financial savings but also contributes to environmental conservation. The city anticipates annual savings of approximately PHP14.974 million from the 1,340-kilowatt total solar capacity. Individual villages are expected to see their electricity costs halved. Specific installations include a 150-kilowatt system in Barangay Taculing, a 140-kilowatt system in Barangay Sum-ag, and smaller systems in other designated areas. The project, costing around PHP100 million, is financed through a loan from the Development Bank of the Philippines.
