Iloilo City has taken a significant step forward in animal protection by establishing animal welfare desks in each of its 10 police stations. The initiative, which was officially launched at the Tanza Police Station on November 22, 2024, aims to address and manage complaints related to animal cruelty more effectively. Each station now has a designated animal welfare officer responsible for enforcing both local and national animal welfare laws.
The launch event was marked by a ceremonial signing of a commitment pledge by city officials, police officers, and representatives from various non-governmental organizations, highlighting a collective dedication to animal welfare. ICPO Director Col. Kim Legada emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “The welfare of animals is a reflection of our community’s heart. By uniting, we can ensure Iloilo City remains a safe and humane environment for both humans and animals.”
Gabriel Corro, representing Acting Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, praised the initiative as a demonstration of the local government’s commitment to fostering a compassionate environment for all living beings. He commended the ICPO and the City Veterinarian for leading this project, which aligns with the city’s vision for a safe, humane, and inclusive community.
Councilor Ely Estante, who chairs the city council’s animal welfare committee, expressed enthusiasm about the future establishment of the Animal Welfare Council, as mandated by the recently passed Iloilo City Animal Welfare Ordinance. This council will guide the development and enforcement of animal welfare-related ordinances in the city.
In addition to setting up these desks, city officials plan to visit schools to promote responsible pet ownership, further enhancing the community’s commitment to animal welfare.
