In a recent confrontation in Barangay Gatuslao, Candoni, Negros Occidental, six members of the New People’s Army (NPA) lost their lives during a clash with government forces on Thursday, November 21, 2024. The Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division reported that the encounter involved joint operations by the 47th and 15th Infantry Battalions targeting the remnants of the NPA’s Southwestern Front. The firefight, which lasted approximately 40 minutes and started around 3:40 a.m. in Sitio Cogon, resulted in the seizure of eight high-powered firearms, including five M-16 rifles, two AK-47s, and one M653 ‘baby’ armalite. No casualties were reported among the military personnel. Lt. Col. J-Jay Javines, spokesperson for the 3ID, confirmed the details of the operation. Following the clash, local police from Candoni and Hinoba-an are aiding the military in clearing operations, while the Army collaborates with police to monitor hospitals and health facilities for any wounded rebels seeking treatment. This incident follows a directive from 3ID Commander Maj. Gen. Marion Sison to intensify efforts against the remaining guerrilla fronts on Negros Island, which include the dismantled South East and South West Fronts under the 302nd Infantry Brigade, and the Northern Negros Front, Central Negros 1 and 2 under the 303rd Infantry Brigade.
