Empowering Seniors with Technology: DICT’s Initiative in Cordillera

·

In a significant move to bridge the digital divide, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) in the Cordillera region is actively involving senior citizens in their ICT training programs. Jing Nino, from the DICT’s ICT Literacy and Competency division, emphasized the importance of these initiatives during an online forum. He highlighted the challenges and rewards of teaching older adults about computers and the internet, noting that while it requires patience, seniors can indeed master these skills.

The training covers essential topics such as understanding computers, internet navigation, digital payments, and crucially, how to avoid online fraud. Nino stressed the vulnerability of seniors to scams, making this education vital. For those still in the workforce, particularly in government roles, these skills enhance productivity by enabling them to use tools like Google, Microsoft Word, and spreadsheets effectively.

For retirees, the internet opens up a world of information and potential new careers. Some seniors, inspired by the training, are even pursuing advanced digital skills with aspirations of entering the ICT field. DICT supports these ambitions through its digital academy program, which offers specialized courses.

Reynaldo Sy, the DICT-Cordillera regional director, added that their transformation hubs are available for any group seeking free ICT lectures or workshops. He shared a success story of a senior who, after attending a training session in 2023, now works as a virtual assistant, showcasing the real-world impact of these programs.
