President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. made a significant impact on the residents of Catanduanes during his visit on November 19, 2024, following the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Pepito (Man-yi). His presence was a beacon of hope for the typhoon-affected community, as he conducted an aerial survey to evaluate the damage and engaged directly with the locals.
Ma. Luisa Calla, a 34-year-old resident from Barangay Moonwalk in Virac, expressed her joy at seeing the President, stating that his visit brought a smile to her face and renewed her spirits amidst the destruction. She shared her personal ordeal, mentioning the loss of her home’s roof to the storm, and appealed to the President for assistance in rebuilding.
Similarly, Nila Dilay, a 50-year-old from Barangay Francia, felt valued by the President’s personal visit, noting the significance of his choice to meet the residents directly rather than delegating to his Cabinet. She highlighted the effectiveness of the government’s evacuation measures during the typhoon.
Governor Joseph Cua of Catanduanes expressed gratitude for the national government’s support, welcoming President Marcos and acknowledging his commitment to the province’s recovery. The President’s visit included the presentation of a PHP50 million check to Governor Cua to aid in rehabilitation efforts.
In addition to financial support, President Marcos oversaw the distribution of 1,000 family food packs and PHP5,000 cash aid to 500 families, facilitated by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). He was accompanied by key Cabinet members from various departments, including Labor and Employment, Public Works and Highways, Interior and Local Government, as well as representatives from the Office of Civil Defense and the Presidential Communications Office.
