Mountain Province Declares State of Calamity After Six Typhoons

On November 18, 2024, the Mountain Province government officially declared a state of calamity following the devastating impact of six typhoons that struck the region since October 24, 2024. The decision was formalized through Provincial Board Resolution 2024-521, which was endorsed by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC). This declaration enables the local government to access its calamity fund to aid in the recovery efforts from the damages caused by Typhoons Kristine (Trami), Leon (Kong-rey), Marce (Yinxing), Nika (Toraji), Ofel (Usagi), and Pepito (Man-yi). The Mountain Province Electric Cooperative (MOPRECO) reported that 90 percent of its service area was left without electricity due to Super Typhoon Pepito. Additionally, the Department of Public Works and Highways – Mountain Province Engineering District noted significant damage to road networks, severely disrupting the movement of people and goods. According to the PDRRMC, 209 families, totaling 647 individuals, were displaced by the typhoons, with 12 families displaced during the peak of Pepito. As of the declaration date, 198 families were still residing in evacuation centers or with relatives. The typhoons also caused damage to 51 houses by Ofel, with one house completely destroyed, and 42 houses partially damaged by Pepito.
