In a significant move to enhance halal tourism and hospitality, Mati City and Davao Oriental State University (DORSU) have formalized a partnership through a five-year memorandum of agreement (MOA). The signing ceremony, held on Monday, November 18, 2024, was led by Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat, who emphasized the city’s ambition to become a beacon of sustainable and inclusive tourism in Mindanao.

The agreement assigns DORSU’s Center for Tourism Information, Education, and Communication (CTIEC) the responsibility of offering technical expertise and educational support to Mati’s City Tourism and Promotions Office. This collaboration aims to elevate Mati City’s status as a model for sustainable and halal tourism, fostering economic growth while respecting the region’s diverse heritage.

Mayor Rabat highlighted the partnership’s focus on programs that align with the city’s halal ordinance, ensuring respect for Muslim beliefs and traditions. DORSU will contribute by providing technical assistance, conducting research, and leading capacity-building initiatives. The City Tourism and Promotions Office is committed to the effective implementation of these projects.

This partnership not only prioritizes inclusivity in tourism policies but also strengthens local capacities in hospitality services. It reflects Mati City’s dedication to economic development while catering to the cultural and religious needs of its diverse communities.
