In a concerted effort to ensure a peaceful electoral process in 2025, the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPO) has ramped up its campaign against loose firearms. On November 11, 2024, at Camp Gov. Antonio Sison in Lingayen, Pangasinan, police officials showcased approximately 3,000 firearms that had been confiscated, abandoned, surrendered, or forfeited since 2016. This display was attended by key figures such as Ilocos Police Regional Office director Brig. Gen. Lou Frias Evangelista and Pangasinan Police Provincial Office director Col. Rollyfer Capoquian.
Since the beginning of the year, the PPO has conducted over 11,630 operations under Oplan Katok, leading to the confiscation of 206 firearms and the voluntary surrender of 305 others. Additionally, 152 firearms were deposited with authorities. These efforts have resulted in the arrest of 161 individuals, highlighting the police’s commitment to reducing the circulation of loose firearms ahead of the elections.
The firearms collected this year, combined with those gathered since 2016, were handed over to the Regional Civil Service Unit (RCSU) on Monday. Col. Capoquian emphasized that these actions are part of a broader strategy to curb the proliferation of loose firearms and maintain order during the upcoming elections. Brig. Gen. Evangelista added that reducing the availability of such weapons is crucial for diminishing potential violence and ensuring that citizens can vote without fear.
With around 22,268 licensed gun owners in Pangasinan, the police’s efforts are a significant step towards a safe and fair electoral environment in 2025.
