DOH Allocates P10 Million for Medical Aid to Bicol Families Hit by Storm Kristine

·

In a significant relief effort, the Department of Health (DOH) Region 5 (Bicol) has been actively distributing medical and logistical support to communities devastated by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine, known internationally as Trami, which struck in October. The DOH-5 has committed PHP9.92 million to aid the affected areas, providing essential supplies and services to those in need.

The aid package includes a wide range of items such as pharmaceuticals, hygiene kits, water purification tablets, and emergency tents, among others. The DOH-5 Health Emergency Response Teams (HERTs) have been instrumental in delivering public health services, including mental health support and nutritional assistance.

Dr. Rodolfo Antonio Albornoz, Director of DOH-5, expressed his gratitude towards all participants in the regional health response. He highlighted the collaborative efforts under the guidance of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Health Secretary Teodoro J. Herbosa, who have mobilized additional medical teams to support the ongoing relief operations.

Albornoz also acknowledged the vital contributions from other government agencies, local government units, and the dedicated medical staff and hospitals across the nation. He praised the healthcare workers as the ‘champions and superheroes’ of the emergency response.

In addition to storm relief, DOH-5 has issued a public health advisory to combat a significant rise in dengue cases in the region, which have increased by 163 percent compared to the previous year. With 2,408 cases reported from January 1 to October 26, the department recommends adhering to the ‘4S’ strategy to prevent further spread of the disease. This strategy involves eliminating mosquito breeding sites, using personal protective measures, seeking early medical consultation, and supporting targeted spraying efforts in outbreak areas.
