Legazpi City’s New Mayor Outlines Ambitious Infrastructure and Urban Development Plans

·

Legazpi City’s newly appointed mayor, Alfredo Garbin Jr., has unveiled an extensive infrastructure plan aimed at transforming the city’s landscape. Speaking at a press conference at city hall on November 12, 2024, Garbin outlined his vision to enhance public works, health services, education, agriculture, transportation, tourism, water systems, and economic development in the city.

Garbin took over the mayoral position from Carmen Geraldine Rosal, who was disqualified by the Commission on Elections in October 2022 for breaching election laws related to the misuse of government funds during a restricted period. Despite losing to Rosal in the May 2022 elections, Garbin’s appointment marks a new chapter for Legazpi.

In his address, Garbin emphasized the importance of responsiveness to the needs of the city’s residents, urging department heads to fulfill their roles diligently. His administration’s goals include improving residents’ quality of life, stimulating economic growth, and positioning Legazpi as a leading example of sustainable urban development.

Key projects under Garbin’s administration include the construction of 77 new classrooms to meet the educational demands of the growing student population, the completion of an international cruise ship terminal to boost tourism and the local economy, the development of the People’s Park as a community and tourist recreational space, and the establishment of MICE centers to attract business events and further enhance tourism and economic prospects.

Funding for major projects such as a 25,000-seat stadium and the international cruise ship terminal will be secured through national government support, facilitated by the Ako Bicol party-list.
