Iloilo Provincial Library Enhances Literacy with Community Outreach

·

The Iloilo Provincial Library and Archives is actively promoting literacy across the province through an engaging outreach program. On October 30, 2024, library staff conducted a storytelling session at a daycare center in Miagao, Iloilo, illustrating their commitment to fostering a love for reading among young children. Provincial Librarian Allana Delgado emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating that the library regularly visits public schools to conduct storytelling and literacy activities designed to captivate and encourage children to read. The choice of schools for these sessions is either based on requests or selected by the library office itself. Through storytelling and puppet shows, the library aims to spark children’s interest in books, hoping that the fascination with stories will lead them to pick up books and learn to read. Delgado also highlighted the broader benefits of reading, noting that it enhances mental skills, focus, and concentration. She believes that many who claim disinterest in reading simply haven’t yet found a book that truly captivates them. In a further effort to promote literacy, the library is organizing a book donation drive this November, encouraging the community to contribute books that will be distributed to schools, libraries, and organizations in need. Donation boxes are available at Casa Real de Iloilo, the Iloilo Provincial Capitol building, and the Provincial Library and Archives office.
