Ilocos Norte Continues Relief Efforts for Typhoon Marce Victims

In the aftermath of Typhoon Marce, also known internationally as Yinxing, Ilocos Norte’s provincial government, led by Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc, has been actively distributing relief supplies. On November 8, 2024, relief efforts continued with the distribution of family food packs and potable water to various evacuation centers across the province, where nearly all households were still without electricity.

The aid reached 331 families who had been evacuated to safe locations such as the Pasuquin covered court, Busan, the municipal covered court of Bacarra, and Plaridel Elementary School in Laoag City. According to Randy Nicolas, the provincial disaster risk reduction and management officer, 500 families, totaling 1,513 individuals, remained in evacuation centers out of the 1,581 families, or 4,733 individuals, affected by the typhoon.

As damage assessments continued, no casualties were reported, though a tornado during the typhoon’s peak destroyed a house in Pagudpud town. Lenie Faylogna from Poblacion 2 in Pagudpud expressed gratitude for the pre-emptive evacuations that ensured no injuries occurred during the incident. Additional reports indicated that at least three houses were destroyed and 87 others damaged in Vintar, Solsona, Pagudpud, San Nicolas, and Carasi.

Efforts to restore power were underway across most of the province, though communication signals remained weak. The town of Adams, with 899 affected families comprising 2,586 individuals, was cut off due to heavy rainfall and the swollen Bolo River.

Rochelle Gajes, from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, reported that 13,031 family food packs were prepared for distribution, along with 1,745 sacks of 50 kg rice stored at the Takuat and National Food Authority warehouses in Laoag City. Additionally, 25 cases of sardines, 300 cases of bottled water, and other non-food items donated by various groups and individuals were ready for distribution. Gajes also mentioned that 7,200 family food packs were strategically placed in seven clusters throughout the province to support local government units in need of relief.
