Davao City Honored for Excellence in Nutrition and Health Initiatives

·

Davao City has been celebrated for its remarkable achievements in nutrition and health, securing both the Green Banner and Pag-asa Awards. The city’s dedication to enhancing the well-being of its residents, especially children, has been recognized through these prestigious accolades. Elizabeth Banzon, who leads the nutrition division at the City Health Office, emphasized that these awards reflect the city’s ongoing commitment to health improvement through robust nutrition programs and collaborative efforts. The Green Banner Award, presented by the National Nutrition Council, honors local government units that excel in promoting nutrition and executing effective community nutrition initiatives. Banzon credited the city’s success to the cooperative efforts of various stakeholders and the dedication of community and nutrition educators. To earn the Green Banner, local governments must engage stakeholders in nutrition interventions and maintain strong policies and services that effectively address nutritional needs. Key to Davao City’s achievements were the establishment of health centers, farm-to-market road projects, and the involvement of multiple city offices including the City Social Welfare and Development Office, the Special Office for Children’s Concerns, and departments responsible for city planning and budget allocation. This marks the second time Davao City has received the Green Banner Award, the first being in 2009. Additionally, the city was awarded the Pag-asa Award for its outstanding coverage in the Operation Timbang program, which tracks the weight and health of children. Banzon stressed that Davao City remains committed to evaluating its progress and pinpointing areas for enhancement to sustain its impact on public nutrition.
