Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia has praised eight barangays for their effective waste segregation efforts, which could serve as models for a city-wide policy. The mayor highlighted the success of these areas in an interview, expressing confidence in meeting the requirements of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. The policy, set to be reintroduced on January 1, 2025, aims to reduce the volume of waste sent to the landfill in Barangay Binaliw by encouraging segregation at the community level. Garcia believes that this approach will not only decrease the amount of biodegradable waste but also promote composting among residents. The selected pilot barangays include Tinago, Tejero, San Roque, Carreta, Barrio Luz, Mabolo, Basak San Nicolas, and Basak Pardo. Ma. Emma Ramas, head of the Solid Waste Management Board, emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting these areas to ensure the policy’s success, with plans for ongoing monitoring of the initiative’s progress.
