In the aftermath of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (Trami), Calamba City is actively providing emergency shelter assistance to nearly 8,000 families across 18 villages. The initiative, led by Mayor Roseller Rizal, began on November 7, 2024, at the Rizal Coliseum, where the first batch of aid was distributed to 926 families whose homes were completely destroyed and 2,076 families with partially damaged homes. These families received PHP10,000 and PHP5,000 respectively, to aid in their recovery efforts.
Celine Manabat, head of the City Social Services and Youth Development Department (CSSYD), highlighted the severe impact of the storm on local housing, noting the urgent need for assistance. The second phase of distribution is set for November 11, 2024, targeting an additional 218 families with totally destroyed homes and 3,815 with partial damage.
The funding for this emergency aid comes from the city’s Calamity Fund, authorized by Resolution No. 543, series of 2024, which declared a state of calamity in Calamba City on October 27. Mayor Rizal has emphasized the importance of a swift validation process to ensure that funds are released promptly, enabling affected families to start rebuilding their lives.
The CSSYD continues to process additional applications from families who submitted late, ensuring that no one is left behind in the recovery efforts. The local government’s commitment to supporting its residents through this challenging time underscores the community’s resilience and solidarity in the face of natural disasters.
